Student Session:

The aim of the Student Session in the 4th International Workshop on Computational Intelligence and Applications is to give an opportunity to students at any level (Bachelor, Master, and PhD students) to present and discuss their work in progress with a possibility to get feedback from senior researchers. Papers co-authored by non-students will be accepted.

The Student Session papers should describe original, unpublished work, completed or in progress, that demonstrates insight, creativity, and promise, according to the author's instructions in the Workshop.

No previously published papers should be submitted. In order to present a paper at the Student Session, at least one student of each accepted paper has to register and present at the session. The author(s) for excellent paper will receive the certificate of award by the program committee.

Software Contest:

The special session for software contest will be held in the 4th International Workshop on Computational Intelligence and Applications 2008 (IWCIA 2008). The software contest has 2 kinds of sessions: General Software Contest Session and Data Mining Competitive Session.

The software contest will conclude with some award ceremony.

[General Software Contest Session]

This session will take a competition for software applications with Java, C/C++, and so on at any platform such as mobile, Windows and Linux. The aim of this event is to give exposure to great smart software applications that don't have as much exposure and awareness as they deserve. The top software applications will be determined by a combination of experts and voting by the workshop attendees. The software developers who will present their work at this session must show the demo of development software. If you would like to submit to this part of software contest, please feel free to ask the Organization Committee: ml-ieee-smc-hiroshima-ws [atmark] hiroshima-u.ac.jp. The authors in the general software contest must submit an extended abstract. (templates: LaTeX format, Microsoft Office Word format)

[Data Mining Competitive Session]

Medical databases are large and complicated. They consist of unfixed terms and ambiguous values, and often contain many deficits in the data. Moreover, it is necessary to consider relationships among multiple items and secular changes in the data. We know the difficulty of handling such medical databases, but we are expected to get knowledge from the databases to propose good health strategies. We would like to collect some papers regarding data mining and knowledge acquisition in medical databases.

Especially, in this session, we have a plan to compare the validity or effectiveness of submitted data mining methods by using the same medical database. The database consists of more than 10,000 records related to heart disease. In this session, we will find outstanding points in proposed algorithms of data mining and knowledge acquisition (classification capability, knowledge representation capability, and so on). If you would like to submit the software contest, please feel free to ask the Organization Committee: ml-ieee-smc-hiroshima-ws [atmark] hiroshima-u.ac.jp. The authors in this data mining session must submit a paper according to the author's instructions in the Workshop. (templates: LaTeX format, Microsoft Office Word format)
